Cultural quarantine: The world's greatest exhibits move online

Global lockdown has seen galleries take to the internet to reach their fans.

You're at the bar and once it gets late, people tend to get philosophical, political and cultural. Only problem is, you never have time to visit a museum or theatre to refine your cultural knowledge. Well, good news – now's the perfect time to expand your cultural IQ!

Whether you suddenly have a lot of hours to fill, or are desperately searching for a new way to occupy your little monkeys if just for 5 minutes, virtual museum tours, online art galleries and theatre can provide that downtime with an added cultural boost. And what better way to ensure that once this quarantine is over you can impress your friends and random strangers with your curiously in-depth knowledge of the Byzantine Empire?

Here are a few ideas to get you exploring...

Virtual museum & gallery tours

Join a virtual tour to see all these magnificent paintings and artefacts without the view blocked by everyone and their mum trying to take a selfie with them.

Theatre

Another way to get more into the cultural spirit is to stream theatre. Since all theatres are closed, actors and directors worldwide have gone online to give their audience a way to experience the stage from their living rooms. Time Out, temporarily rebranded 'Time In', gives you an overview of the best theatre to watch online right now.

But watch out – like any other theatre, these plays are available only for a limited run!

Going local

If you don't fancy on looking at your screen all day (and depending on the lockdown measures for your area), go out for a walk and see how many artworks you can discover in your area. Can you spot something you've never before noticed?

While it's likely there won't be any new street art for some time since we all have to stay at home, that hasn't stopped artists getting creative. Just check out Banksy's novel take on interior decor!
